Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has just confirmed a stunning milestone in the age of artificial intelligence: up to 30% of Microsoft’s codebase is now written by AI systems. Speaking at Meta’s inaugural LlamaCon developer conference, Nadella revealed that “20% to 30% of the code that is inside of our repos today and some of our projects are probably all written by software,” referring specifically to AI-generated code. This figure is not just a snapshot-it’s steadily rising, signaling a seismic shift in how software is built at one of the world’s largest tech companies.
The impact is especially pronounced in languages like Python, where AI tools are excelling, while legacy languages such as C++ see less AI involvement. Microsoft’s CTO, Kevin Scott, has even projected that by 2030, as much as 95% of all code could be generated by AI. This trend is echoed across the industry, with Google’s CEO also reporting that AI now writes over 30% of their code.
